Patrick Campbell
was born on October 20, 1953 in Monterey, California. He was raised in Ohio. In
1975, he graduated summa cum laude from Ohio University, Athens, Ohio,
with a B.A. degree in History. He was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa. In
his last two years at Ohio University, he was a member of Phi Alpha Theta, the
International History Honor Society and served as Vice-President of the Local
Chapter. Mr. Campbell spent a semester abroad studying at the Institute de
Touraine, Tours, France in the Spring of 1975.
In 1978, he graduated in the top fifteen percent of his class at the University of Toledo, Toledo, Ohio, receiving his J.D. degree. He was awarded a University Scholarship and received the highest grades in his courses in Comparative Law and Torts. He served as research assistant for the Dean of the Law School, Francis Beytagh. Dean Beytagh wrote a casebook on Constitutional Law, for which Mr. Campbell did the bulk of the research. His term paper in Comparative Law was later published in the Hastings International and Comparative Law Review.
From 1978 through 1980, Mr. Campbell was an Instructor at the University of Cincinnati, College of Law, and the University of San Diego, School of Law. He taught courses in Legal Research and Writing. During his two years at the University of Cincinnati, he also taught Appellate Advocacy.
In 1981, Mr. Campbell moved to Germany, and in 1986, he received his doctoral degree magna cum laude from the J.W. Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany. His degree work included a general study of the German legal system, but concentrated on international and criminal law. His dissertation titled "German Criminal Code §220a: The Correct Way to Prevent and Punish Genocide?" was published in the Frankfurter Kriminalwissenschaftliche Studien. It outlined the bases for the prevention and punishment of genocide on an international basis.
After returning to California in 1986, Mr. Campbell worked for other firms as an associate and managing attorney. He also taught Legal Research and Writing and Appellate Advocacy part-time at Golden Gate University, San Francisco, California from 1988-89 and 2001-06. Mr. Campbell opened his own law office in 1991 and has been practicing from his own office ever since. He has appeared in courts and represented clients throughout the Northern California counties and in Los Angeles as well in his Areas of Practice.
Mr. Campbell is admitted to the practice of law in the state courts of both California and Ohio. He is also admitted to practice before the United States District Court, Northern District & Eastern District, of California and the Ninth Circuit Court Of Appeals. He speaks fluent German and can correspond in French. He is a member of the International Bar Association, German-American Law Association (Deutsch-Amerikanische Juristenvereinigung), California Bar Association and Alameda County Bar Association. He served as Chair of the International Law Committee of the Alameda County Bar Association from 1997 -- 2001. He was also a director on the board of the Friends of the Oakland Fox, Inc. from 2000 – 2006, its treasurer from 2000 – 2006, its founding incorporator, and its secretary from 2000 – 2007. He did all of the work to qualify this non-profit corporation as a charitable, tax exempt organization with the appropriate federal and state agencies and keep it in compliance during those years.
